When Missy was 2, we had family and friends round as an excuse for a get together as her birthday falls in summer. I started doing parties away from home at party venues once they were 3. As always, do what suits your family best. If others want to do it, then let them get on with it but don't feel you have to do it to keep up with them. It's a waste of money and a cause of unnecessary stress. When she's 2 she'll be old enough to appreciate it. At 1 she will barely appreciate the pressies. I wouldn't worry about it. She didn't know any different! If I had lots of fam and friends near by I probably would have had 1st and 2nd parties too!
