10 Things I’d Love to Know the Answer to!

5

1. Where DO odd socks go? I mean seriously, they just vanish into thin air! I have about 5 odd socks in Zara’s drawer and can’t find the matching ones anywhere! Is there a sock monster living in my house? Do they get abducted by aliens?

2. Do elephants ever lie down? And if not do their legs get tired carrying around all that weight all the time?

3. Will the Internet ever get so big that it collapses under it’s own weight and just vanishes? I mean surely it’s one of those things that just keeps growing and growing so how big can it get before it bursts?

4. Will I EVER be able to figure out how to curl my own hair? People always tell me how lovely my hair looks wavy but i just can’t style it like that myself!

5. Why does the postman always ring the doorbell when you are in the shower or try to deliver parcels when you are out? Even when you are expecting them and wait in all day, they choose the 5 minutes you are in the shower or out in the garden to knock and then leave you a card!

6. Why DOES baileys taste so damn nice?

7. If I poke a shark in the eye would it really stop it eating me?

8. If I ran around the world in a westerly direction fast enough would I really go back in time? Obviously I know I couldn’t RUN fast enough but you know what I mean!

9. Will tesco ever stop adding meat items to my favourites section in online shopping? Despite them telling me they don’t do it and only items I have ever bought will be in there! Really so when exactly did I buy chicken flavoured Iams cat food or a microwave tescos meat lasagne?

10. What on earth have I been talking about to manage almost 13,000 tweets on twitter in just over a year? Well I can show you one of my favourite tweets which was this one:

A bit of an announcement even though I was still out of it

50 Hours Flying Solo

7

Ever wonder what it is like looking after a 4 month old baby and an 18 month old toddler for 50 hours by yourself? Well wonder no more! As you know it’s been a busy weekend for me with both the kiddies whilst the husband has been away and I managed to keep an hour by hour diary of just how much work it involved!

Friday

3pm Oscar has bottle (well half of it), he wasn’t due for one yet but hubby home shortly and we will have to take him to the train station so tried feeding O earlier to fit in with our plan.

3:30pm Hubby home and just has time for a quick shower and to grab his bags before we load O into the car and head to the train station. Say a quick goodbye, hubby dashes for train and I head back home.

4:20pm Home from station, just time to give O the rest of his bottle and make some dinner for Zara before going to pick her up from nursery. Tonight she is having dairylea sandwiches and some fruit. On nursery days she has a big cooked meal for lunch so tonight I don’t feel guilty for just giving her sandwiches. Pop sandwiches in fridge.

5:15pm Load O into car seat again, set off to pick up Z from nursery. One of the girls from nursery helps me to carry Z back to car as I’ve got O in the car seat and not enough hands for a car seat, a toddler and her bags.

5:30pm Home, pop Z in high chair, pop O into Tripp Trapp newborn seat, give Z her sandwiches and have some myself. Have lots of giggles and follow sandwiches by yoghurt.

6pm O has fallen asleep so make most of opportunity to go bath Zara. Lots of splashing and laughing before time to go downstairs and have her evening bottle.

6:30pm O still asleep so give Z her bedtime bottle, O wakes around 7ish so give him a bottle whilst Z is playing in the living room with us.

A little time playing on the playmat together before bed

7:30pm O finishes his bottle, change his nappy, pop him on sofa, change Z’s nappy take her up to bed.

7:45pm O has fallen asleep again so take him up to bed (Wow both children in bed by 7:45pm – extra brownie points for me!!)

Come downstairs, clean kitchen, tidy up dinner pots, load dishwasher, wash and sterilise bottles, sort out washing, make a cup of tea.

8pm sit down with a cup of tea and watch Eastenders!

9pm I go to bed as been up since 5am and I’m exhausted!

11:30pm Z awake and crying. Take her downstairs, change nappy, she doesn’t want medicine but obvious her teeth hurting her (she has 4 coming through at the moment) so offer her a bottle (3fl oz) and lace it with nurofen. Take her upstairs with bottle and lie in my bed whilst she has it. Wait for nurofen to kick in, she falls asleep in my bed so I transfer her back to hers. As much as I’d love her to sleep with me, she’d just wake up when O wants a bottle later.

Lying in mummy's bed waiting for nurofen to kick in

Saturday

12am Back in bed, both babies quiet again, time for a bit more sleep.

5am Oscar awake, take him downstairs, change nappy, give him bottle. Once he has finished pop him on sofa and go feed the cats.

6:30am O asleep on sofa so grab a quick shower, empty dishwasher, litter tray, put a load of washing on, hang another load on the line outside.

7am Z and O both currently asleep, have some breakfast and go to make a cup of tea, realise I have no teabags! Bugger! Will have to venture out to shop at some point this morning to go get some.

7:15am Zara awake, go upstairs to get her, change nappy, sit her in high chair and give her some breakfast (banana and shreddies), O wakes up so pop him in Tripp Trapp whilst Z finishes her breakfast.

8am Breakfast over, O crying, take Z upstairs to get dressed then pop her in the playpen to play for a while whilst I go get Oscar another bottle (he isn’t interested!)

8:30am Desperate for a cup of tea. Quick nappy sniff indicates no immediate nappy changes required so load both of them into Phil & Teds and walk up to the shop. O cries all the way there (he must be working on his morning poo, always cries until he has done it)

9am Back home from shop, O asleep in pram so leave him there, give Z a bowl of grapes and pop her in playpen whilst I go tidy the kitchen and hang another load of washing out.

10am O awake, change Z nappy, change O nappy, give O bottle whilst Z sits with us. O does a poo mid bottle so change his nappy again, just finish fastening his clothes up and he does another, change his nappy again. That’s 4 nappy changes in 10 minutes!!

10:30am Sit and have a cup of tea whilst Z & O are entertaining each other on the playmat, well Z is entertaining O anyway. Have to keep a close eye to make sure she doesn’t drag him off anywhere or squash him.

11:20am Lunch for Z whilst O is asleep, Z looking tired so lunch is earlier than usual today. Whilst Z is eating I grab a cup of tea and make up the bottles which I sterilised earlier.

11:45am Lunch over, change Z’s nappy and take her up for a nap. O awake again so pop him on playmat for a while so I can go and tidy up lunch dishes in kitchen.

12pm O unsettled, he shouldn’t be hungry yet, grab some lunch myself whilst its semi-quiet.

12:30pm O throws up all over playmat, change his outfit and nappy, clean up baby puke.

1pm Give O bottle

1:30pm O throws up entire bottle, outfit change needed for both of us needed, also wipe down sofa cushions which are covered in baby puke

2pm Both asleep, fetch in washing, put dishwasher on, have 3 cups of tea in a row as desperate for caffeine

2:30pm Z awake, change nappy and play in playpen with her for 1.5hours whilst O is asleep. We have grapes and snacks in there as a picnic.

4pm Give O bottle whilst Z sits with us and watches TV. Change O’s nappy

5pm O settled so go and cook Z’s dinner in kitchen with her. Forget to shut kitchen door, realise my error when Z vanishes in the 2 seconds I have my back turned, find her sitting on top step of the stairs #badmummy (we can’t find a stairgate to fit the bottom)

5:30pm Sit down and eat dinner. O is in tripp trap and crying, Z throws her food all over the floor, then O throws up all over it for good measure. Give up trying to eat, go change O and pop him in living room, give Z a yoghurt and whilst both quiet tidy kitchen and sort out dishes.

6pm O asleep on sofa so go take Z for a bath. Get soaked to the skin, Z screams when I take her out of the bath

6:30pm Sit and give Z her evening bottle whilst O is still asleep.

7-7:45pm Sit and play in playpen with Z, then change nappy and take her up to bed.

8pm O still asleep so finish cleaning up in the kitchen, wash and sterilise bottles and boil kettle. Tidy up in playpen.

8:15pm make cup of tea and sit down

9:15pm O still asleep so wake him up to give him bottle , change nappy and he is in bed by 10:20pm

10:30pm I’m off to bed whilst both babies are quiet.

Sunday

6:07am O awake, change nappy and give bottle.

7:15am Z awake, take her into my room whilst I get dressed (no time for a shower this morning, will have to have one tonight when hubby home). Take Z downstairs, change nappy, have breakfast. Put O in tripp trapp as he is awake.

8:30am get Z dressed, put washing in machine, tidy kitchen

9am O has half a bottle, change both nappies, load pushchair

9:30am Both children loaded into pushchair and we are off out. We go for a walk down the road, past the horses and baby horses, onto the field where we spend 45 minutes playing football whilst O is asleep in the pram. Then we walk up to shop and buy a couple of fab lollies which Z and I eat on our way back home.

11:15am Home again, make Z some lunch, put O in tripp trapp.

12pm Lunch over, change Z’s nappy and take her upstairs for a nap, change O’s nappy and attempt to give O bottle (falls asleep after 1fl oz) so go tidy up kitchen and hang out washing.

12:30pm attempt to give O rest of bottle, he throws up everywhere, change his outfit, continue with bottle, he does explosive poo so go change nappy and outfit again. Place O on playmat and have a cup of tea

1:50pm Oscar wanting another bottle seeing as he threw last one up, go get him a bottle and just about to start giving it him but Z wakes up crying.

2pm go fetch Z down, she is crying which is unusual but figure it’s because she has done a poo so change her nappy, give her a bowl of grapes and a drink and then continue giving O his bottle

2:10pm Z comes to me crying wanting more drink, put O down for a minute mid bottle, pick up Z and head to kitchen. Make it to hallway and she throws up all over me and hall carpet. Make hasty detour upstairs and change us both, leaving a trail of sick all the way up the stairs.

2:20pm come downstairs, sit down with Z and she pukes up all over the sofa, the rug and both of us. Take up both back upstairs and change us, put Z in bath and hose her down with shower as she is feeling hot, take temp and its 39 degrees.

2:30pm O still wanting rest of his bottle but has been temporarily abandoned on sofa, Z throws up again, this time most of it was caught in towel and only my top needed changing.

2:45pm text hubby, he is still at least 2 hours away. At this point I hit the panic button and phone a friend. Mandy arrives 10 minutes later and takes over giving O the rest of his bottle whilst I get puked on again by a screaming Zara.

3pm O finishes his bottle so Mandy puts him down and heads off around the house cleaning up sick for me whilst I look after Z who has nothing left to puke.

3:30-5:30 Mandy and I sit on sofa with both children waiting for hubby to get home.

6pm Hubby arrives home, I hand him Zara and take Oscar off Mandy, thank her a million times and let her go home.

So there we have it, 50 hours of flying solo with the two of them. I almost made it all the way without help but thanks to a tummy bug it all went pear shaped at the end. The puking continued all night and Z was off nursery on Monday but is much better now thank goodness!

I need your help to identify this doggy

7

People I need your help! We were given this toy dog by some of my husbands old students when Zara was born. Doggy is her favourite, she sleeps with him, takes him to nursery and very rarely let’s him out of her site.

He is starting to look very tatty now and desperately needs a wash and his hole sewing up but I can never get him out of her grasp long enough.

Have any of you seen a doggy like this before and if so where? I really really need to get a couple of spares because I’m dreading the day doggy goes AWOL!

It was bought by a couple of 6th form lads so I’m guessing they didn’t pop into mothercare or mamas and papas for it!

My most memorable tweets

2

I’ve been thinking back to when Oscar was born and trying to find out what I had tweeted on that day and I’ve managed to find a few of them so thought I’d share them with you.

This one was tweeted just as I’d been told they were going to deliver and they were getting everything ready to take me off to theatre.

Tweeted just before I went to have Oscar he was born at 4.28pm

This was my first tweet after coming round from the anaesthetic

Tweeted shortly after I came round from general anaesthetic

Closely followed by one with a bit more information

A bit of an announcement even though I was still out of it

This was closely followed by my sister posting the following blog post on here at 20:10:

Introducing…

It’s amazing looking back and seeing what you tweeted on certain days isn’t it :)

Washday Blues and My Strange Obsession

5

I like to think I’m a pretty normal person 99% of the time but when it comes to doing the laundry I have a secret side to my personality which I need to confess about. Maybe its the Libra in me, or the accountant but I like things to match and balance nicely and this causes me a few problems.

Take this photo of my washing line for instance, looks like a pretty normal washing line yes?

20110629-103201.jpg

WRONG! Oh so wrong. Let me list a few of the issues I have with this particular washing line:

  1. For a start the washing line is wonky and not at a perfect 90 degree angle to the floor (I blame my husband for this)
  2. The clothes haven’t been hung out equally, you will notice that one side of the line has no clothes on it at all.
  3. The pegs – oh my goodness the pegs!! When I hang out my washing I always try to co-ordinate the peg colour with the colour of the clothes and you can NEVER, I repeat NEVER have odd pegs hanging up an item of clothing – they must MATCH
  4. There are UNUSED pegs on the washing line, now I hate this, you should only use the required number of pegs and all others should remain in the peg basket at ALL times. I blame my husband for this disaster as he brought the last load in from outside.
    20110629-103225.jpg
  5. The most awful crime with this washing line is carefully hidden behind other clothes as I just couldn’t stand the embarrassment. It is the ultimate washing day crime of all and one that can almost reduce me to tears! ODD socks!!
20110629-103217.jpg If anyone knows the whereabouts of this socks partner then PLEASE let me know as I’ve searched every-bloody-where and it has just vanished. I’m tempted to just take it down and throw it in the bin but it would be just my luck the other sock would turn up in the next load of washing :(

Its odd that I care so much about balancing my washing line and it all looking tidy but I don’t even own an iron! I don’t do ironing at all, I don’t mind if Zara leaves the house with creases in her clothes but god forbid they are hung on my washing line with mismatched pegs! (I told you I was strange!)

And the oddness continues…It isn’t just me who has slightly odd laundry obsessions in my house, I can also reveal my husband has a shirt hanging obsession. Although we don’t have an iron in the house we do have a steamer for getting rid of creases in some clothes (usually just my husbands work shirts) and the best way of doing this is to dry shirt, place on hanger, steam it and then place in wardrobe ready for use. Now my husband has to have all the shirts facing the same direction and buttoned up so that his wardrobe looks nice and tidy. You will see in the photo below a prime example of how he wouldn’t want them to be hung on the hanger. They are a) not buttoned up and b) facing the wrong way!
20110629-103238.jpg
I confess I have done this deliberately in REVENGE for the absolute state that he has left my washing line in!

NameArt Review

3

I’ve known the lovely Charis from NameArt on twitter for quite a while now. Last year she sent us a hooded top for Zara and recently I asked her to help me out with some pictures for Oscar’s and Zara’s rooms.

We had decided on a woodland theme for Oscar’s room and I had already purchased one owl canvas but I loved the idea of getting a NameArt canvas for his room. Charis promptly set to work and came back to me with a beautiful design within the day and so I ordered it straight away.

Oscar the Owl

Here it is in place beside one of his other owl canvases :)

Of course I couldn’t leave Zara out so I had to order a canvas for her room aswell. Zara’s room is a jungle theme and so I decided to order Zara a giraffe canvas for her wall.

Giraffe Canvas for Zara

It fits in really well with the rest of Zara’s room as you can see here :)

So both of my children now have a lovely personalised nameart canvas which I hope they will treasure for years to come :)

I think the designs speak for themselves and you don’t need me to rave about them. The quality is great and I think they make a great addition to the rooms. I should add that I paid for both of these items and I’m doing this review as a favour for Charis as she has also very kindly designed by blog header for me recently when I fancied a revamp of my blog. Fab isn’t it?

So if you are looking for an original gift for your friends or family, please pop by Nameart and see if they have anything that might fit the bill :)

Cybermummy11 – The highs, lows and bits inbetween

12

Well I’m sure you’ve all been fascinated with my “other” cybermummy post which is here for those of you who missed my talk.

But I thought I’d better write a post of what I gained from the day :)

  1. I learnt that after spending the last 18 months in the company of babies my ability for public speaking has vanished and for those who did attend my session I can only apologise if it was complete waffle. But hopefully my post on the subject will more than make up for it. I also realise that I said “in the eyes of HMRC” rather a lot, if anyone kept count could you please let me know how many times I said it! :)

Me doing my session - note the barefeet as I forgot to put shoes back on

  2. I was lucky to meet Sarah Brown and her talk was very inspirational and it was lovely to meet her afterwards and get my book signed by her. My husband teaches politics and he is proudly telling everyone that his wife has spoke at the same conference as Sarah Brown lol. I imagine our signed book will be proudly shown to all his future politics classes.

    Mrs Brown & Mrs Brown

  3. I learnt that I really can’t function without a constant supply of caffeine. When at home I must drink about 100 cups of tea a day and I found the caffeine restrictions at Cybermummy quite a challenge! It would have been lovely to have been able to get tea and coffee inbetween the specified coffee breaks.
  4. I met some wonderful people, some who I already follow and some who have never crossed my radar before. The conversations we had were hysterical and it was lovely to put faces to names at last. My blogroll will be growing considerably after this (though it will take me a few weeks to go through all the business cards and remember everyone)
  5. Whereas some people look exactly like their avatars, a lot of people were very hard to recognise and I was constantly grabbing peoples lanyards to see who they were. After the first hour I lost all embarrassment about doing this and so if you were approached by the tall blonde who grabbed your badge and said “so who are you?” then it was probably me :)
  6. A few bloggers seem to believe in their own self importance and if you blog is not ranked in the top 10 then you aren’t worth speaking too! I’m not naming names but there were some who I thought came across as very nice on twitter and their blogs but I was sadly disappointed in real life.
  7. I learnt that I’m not actually that bothered about not being a “top 100″ blog, you see it became apparent that a lot of people know me and read my blog. At the end of the day what really matters is that I enjoy blogging and sharing my life with people. Yes I love reviewing items and I will accept the occasional advertisement but being at Cybermummy reinforced by views that I will always carefully consider what items I review and what advertisements I accept and that sponsored posts just aren’t what my readers want to see. In reality I have turned down more PR requests than I have accepted this month because I don’t want my blog to be too cluttered and irrelevant to my readers. Basically I’m not going to sell my soul in order to get products (though I will consider selling my baby in exchange for a LeapPad (see below) ;) )
  8. That despite all the goody bags, somebody should really have chucked some tissues in one of them or at least placed a box of tissues on each table as they were definitely required for the key note sessions.
  9. I discovered that some of the PR people really should get a personality transplant! However others were lovely and I’d liked to have spent more time chatting to them instead of rushing around getting a passport signed.
  10. My favourite product of the day (and no I’ve not been paid to say this) was definitely the Leapfrog LeapPad. I can’t wait for them to be launched as I’m desperate to get my hands on one for Zara! I know the age range is age 4-9 but I figure if my 18 month old is capable of using my Iphone she can certainly handle a LeapPad :) So if any PRs from Leapfrog happen to be reading this then pretty pretty please can I review one for you ;)
  11. I loved having a chance to get my hair and makeup done in the P&G recharge room. Having 2 kids under 18 months I seldom get time to sit down and be pampered so it was a real pleasure. It was also lovely to get my toesnails done and get a lovely pair of crocs to wear

    Mrs Glam

    Toes and Crocs

  12. I really should have kidnapped Sian To and stolen one of the Hyundai cars and zoomed up the M1 to York to gatecrash the Morrissey gig :)
  13. Cybermummy missed a trick, they should have got a luggage sponsor to provide us with huge pink holdalls on wheels for us all to take our goodies home in!

    Mummy Loves and Our Goodies

I could go on forever but I will leave it at that for now :) Overall I had a wonderful weekend in London with my sister Mummy Loves and I will definitely be queuing up to buy tickets for Cybermummy12!

Lastly a HUGE thank you to my wonderful sponsor

Tax and Blogging – What you need to know!

9

Following my talk at Cybermummy11 I have put together the following guide to blogging and tax. Apologies if you attended my talk and it was complete waffle but it would have been impossible to fit all this information into my timeslot and it would have no doubt bored you all senseless!

Please bear in mind that tax is a huge area and that it also depends on any other income you may have etc and so this guide is a general guide and if you have any concerns relating to your personal taxation situation then you should really speak to an accountant or tax adviser.

So make sure you are prepared with a big mug of tea and biscuits and we shall begin :) Any questions on anything, just leave me a comment and I’ll answer it for you this week.

Do I need to pay tax?

The short answer to this is YES! If you are making any money from your blog then you need to start considering whether there is tax to pay. There is very little income in the UK that is not taxable – you can see a full list of this here on the HMRC website:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/taxable-income.htm

Everybody has a personal allowance but once this has been exceeded then any other income not on that list is then subject to income tax.

Hobby or Business?

The first step in figuring out how and how much tax you have to pay is working out whether your blog is a hobby or a business. Now you may consider that your blog is just your hobby but the way that HMRC views it could be different. HMRC looks for something called “Badges of Trade” in order to assess whether you are operating as a business or not. The full list of them is here:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/bimmanual/BIM20205.htm

The main thing that you really need to consider from all that is whether you are intending to make a profit from your blog (even though you may not actually be making one at present), if you are regularly doing business like transactions (ie charging for advertisements) and how the transactions are carried out. If you are unsure as to whether you should register your blog as a business then you should speak to an accountant or tax adviser.

I think I would be classed as a hobby even though occasionally I make a small income from my blog?

If you don’t meet any of the badges of trade about and feel that HMRC would class your blog as a hobby then you will still need to pay tax on any income you occasionally make through it. You won’t need to register for self assessment if you are already paying tax through PAYE, if the income is up to £2500 you can contact HMRC and ask them to adjust your PAYE code so that any extra tax will be deducted through your employer. This link basically tells you what you need to know about contacting them to do this.

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/non-paye-income.htm

Remember you can still deduct the costs of running your blog from any income you receive but whereas with a business if you make a loss you could offset it against other income, with hobby income (ie casual earnings) you can’t use losses to carry forward or set against other income.

OK so I think HMRC would view my blog as a business, what should I do now?

The first thing you will need to do is register with HMRC for self assessment, this should be done within 3 months of starting your business. The latest you can register for self assessment is the 5th October in the year following the tax year, so if your blog earned you income between 6th April 2010 and 5th April 2011 you will need to make sure you are registered for self assessment by 5th October 2011!

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/non-paye-income.htm

So how much tax will I have to pay?

If you run your blog as a business then you will need to pay Class 2 National Insurance payments of £2.50* per week although you can apply for a Small Earnings Exemption certificate if your earnings are less than £5,315* per year. You will also be liable to pay Class 4 National Insurance contributions of 9%* on any profits between £7,225* and £42,475* per year and you pay 2%* on any profits over that.

Income tax is payable on any profits from the blog whether it is classed as a business or a hobby. Everybody is entitled to a personal “tax free” allowance of £7,475* and if your profits plus any other taxable income you receive do not exceed this then no income tax would be payable. Any profits over this are subject to tax of 20%* up to £37,400* and 40%* up to £150k* and 50% over £150k*.

*rates used are for the tax year 2011/12

What kind of income is classed as taxable?

Here are a few common types of income you may get from your blog:

  • Advertising
  • Sponsored posts
  • Affiliate sales – where you get a % for sales made through a link from your blog
  • Payments in Kind – ie if you are given a product in exchange for an advertisement on your blog. For this you should record a fair market value, this could be the lower of either the usual rate you charge for an advertisement on your blog or the market value of the product you received.

What isn’t taxable are:

  • Goody bags you receive from PR events, if you are not expected to do anything in return for them then they can be classed as gifts
  • Days out or being entertained by PR/Companies. Again as long as there are no “terms and conditions” relating to the day out then it is classed as you are being entertained and you will not need to pay tax relating to this.
  • Items received for review – this is a bit of a grey area but as long as you are going to use the item for personal use and just post your personal opinion of the product on your blog then you won’t need to pay tax on it. However if you acquire the products with the intention of selling them on, then they will be taxable!

So what expenses can I claim to deduct against this income?

The full list of allowable business expenses can be found here on the HMRC website:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/dmgmanual/html/dmg31001/07_0141_DMG35003.htm

Basically an expense is allowable if it was reasonably incurred and wholly and exclusively incurred for the purpose of the business. Although there are some expenses which are not deductible for tax purposes.

Tax allowable examples include:

  • Web hosting fees
  • Domain Registration
  • Marketing costs such as advertising your blog, business cards etc
  • Attending conferences to promote your blog – ie the cost of attending Cybermummy
  • A proportion of your broadband costs (you would need to apportion this between private and business use)
  • Heating and Lighting – BUT rules apply to this (see below)

What about Heating, Lighting, Home Office costs?

Certain costs can be claimed for using your home as your office if your blog is classed as a business. Full guidance on what you can and cannot claim can be found here:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/bimmanual/bim47820.htm

You can alternatively claim a weekly allowance, the HMRC would not query a £2/£3 weekly charge for home office use being put through as an expense.

Expenses which are not tax deductible include:

  • Capital items such as laptops, hard drives etc, capital allowances can be claimed on these so see further down for details about this.
  • Entertaining – if you take a PR/Company out for lunch/dinner and pay for it yourself you will not be able to claim this against tax as entertaining is not allowable!
  • Any private portion of expenses claimed (ie if you use your broadband 50% of the time for business and 50% of the time for personal use then only 50% can be claimed).

Capital Allowances

If you run your blog as a business then any capital assets you buy for it such as hard drives, laptops etc can be used to claim capital allowances. The most relevant capital allowance that you could claim would be the AIA (Annual Investment Allowance). Until April 2012 you can basically spent up to £100k on assets for your business (not cars or buildings) and claim 100% of the cost as a capital allowance which will reduce your taxable profits, from April 2012 this will drop to £25k. If you buy a laptop which you are going to also use for personal use then you can only claim a capital allowance for the business proportion of use!

Right, I know what I can claim as income and expenses, how should I record it?

The main thing you should so whether your blog is a hobby or a business is keep all your receipts!! I personally find the simplest way is to have a big brown envelope and keep putting them in there whenever I incur a business expense.

If you then log all the income/expenses in a spreadsheet this will make completing your self assessment much easier, I’d recommend a different tab for income, expenses and capital items.

It is important to keep all these records for a minimum of 6 years!

How do I complete my self assessment?

The simplest way of completing a self assessment is by doing it online (or getting an accountant to do it for you ;) ) There is however plenty of guidance on the HMRC website here:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/complete-self-emp.htm

I could spend hours telling you which boxes you need to fill in etc but it would a) take far too long and b) I do run a business so I can’t keep giving away my services for free all the time ;) If you do want me to do your self assessment for you and you have no other income aside from PAYE then I can offer a HUGE discount on my normal self assessment fees for you PROVIDING you can get everything to me before 1st December! December and January are by far my busiest months and so unfortunately I can’t offer a discount if you ask me to do your self assessment then :)

When would I have to pay any tax?

Tax for the tax year 2010/11 (6th April 2010 – 5th April 2011) will be payable by 31st January 2012 (the deadline for filing self assessments online and paying any tax due). When you pay this tax you will also notice that they will also add on a 50% prepayment for next years tax bill. This is because when you are paying tax through self assessment on a regular basis the payments go something like this (sorry if this gets a bit confusing but it’s very hard to simplify).

Lets say you have tax of £1000 to pay for tax year 2010/11 and £1500 to pay for tax year 2011/12

On 31/1/12 you will submit your tax return for 2010/11 and pay the £1000 tax but you will also pay a 50% payment towards your 2011/12 bill based on the 2010/11 bill (£500) so total payable will be £1500.

On 31/7/12 you will pay your second payment on account towards your 2011/12 tax bill (ie £500)

On 31/1/13 you will pay any balancing amount on your 2011/12 tax bill and 50% payment on account towards next years tax bill. So if the tax bill is £1500, you have already paid £500 on 31/1/12 and £500 on 31/7/12 and so you will need to pay the remaining £500 plus 50% payment on account of £750 so total payable would be £1250.

Other things you need to consider relating to income and blogging!

  • If you are claiming child tax credits or working tax credits (or other benefits directly related to your income) then you will also need to include extra income from your blog on your tax credit renewal form. You only currently need to declare extra income over £300 (that is total extra income not just your blog income) and so if your total extra income does not exceed £300 then you need not declare it, if it does then you only need to declare the amount over £300 (ie if your extra income is £500 then you would only declare £200 on your tax credit renewal form). The Tax Credit Office may charge you a penalty if they find that you have supplied incorrect information in your claim. But they’ll contact you to tell you – they never give automatic penalties.
  • Anything you win in competitions from other blogs etc is not taxable.

VAT and Limited Companies

The current limit where you would have to register for VAT is £73,000 turnover in a year, for the purposes of this post I’m assuming most of your blogs don’t generate this and so I will skim over the subject. You can of course voluntarily register for VAT before you reach this level of turnover if you feel it will benefit you! More information can be found here for those interested:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/start/register/index.htm

There is the option of setting up your blog as a Limited Company if you feel this is of benefit to you although the accounting costs do increase and there is more paperwork involved. I’m not going to go into this now but if it is something you want more information on it can be found here:
