This post is this weeks entry for The Gallery over at Sticky Fingers

The prompt this week is My Blog.

Now Tara really had me stumped with this weeks theme, as if last weeks wasn’t hard enough!

Anyway I got to thinking about my blog and decided it’s a bit like the weather, sometimes it’s happy and sunny and sometimes it’s miserable and rainy so what do you get when you have a mixture of both of those?

The Gallery: Tomorrow

15

This post is this weeks entry for The Gallery over at Sticky Fingers

The prompt this week is Tomorrow.

My Tomorrows

Tomorrow I may get to sleep all night,
Tomorrow may drive me to tears,
Tomorrow I may be exhausted,
But
Tomorrow I will be amazed by something new you do,
Tomorrow I will count my blessings when I look at you,
Because Zara and Oscar, you are all my tomorrows and my tomorrows would be nothing without you.

I’ll never be a natural mum…but…

15

A conversation on twitter last night got me thinking. As most of you are aware I’m now a mum of 2!! Oscar aged 7 weeks and Zara aged 16 months and to say I’ve been finding it difficult is an understatement.

I’ve always admired those natural mothers, you know the ones you see that can handle 5 children simultaneously without messing up their hair, can change a nappy one handed whilst drinking coffee and organising charity events. The mums who never seem to ask for help, they instinctively know exactly what to do with their children and have probably never had to look on the internet or read a book to find out what they need to do. It seems these mums are everywhere and I can’t help but feel inadequate when I compare myself to them. It’s probably one of the reasons I stopped going to baby and toddler groups as everyone else seemed to be finding motherhood a piece of cake and there was me with a screaming Zara who did nothing but scream unless I took her home for a nap.

It’s not all doom and gloom though, you see I am a mum and motherhood may not have come naturally to me, but like everything in my life I try my hardest and I work bloody hard to make sure I do something well. I’ve spent the last 16 months studying books, the internet, asking questions and quite often tearing my hair out but you know what? I’ve survived and I think I’ve done a pretty good job.

It’s only when I look at Zara now and I realise I’ve actually done a bloody good job of raising her. She is intelligent, curious, independent, social, eats brilliantly, sleeps well and is a joy to be with. Nursery are always telling us how great she is to look after and how she is such a clever little girl for her age and this makes me swell with pride. I look at her and can’t help smiling when I think “I did that!”

The result of all my hard work!

And now the fun really begins because just as I’m getting used to being a mum, along comes baby number two :) Although looking after Oscar seems to be much easier this time, looking after 2 is probably the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced. I really don’t know how I’ll manage it, the thought of being left alone with both of them (we are lucky to be in a position where Zara continues to go to nursery during the week for now) terrifies me. I mean how on earth do you manage to deal with a newborn screaming for a feed and a toddler screaming for cuddles because her teeth hurt when you can only have one pair of hands. It’s a logistical nightmare and all careful planning seems to have gone out of the window. They just don’t write books about how to cope in this situation so I’m making it up as I go along :) I know the next few months are going to be hard and unlike some mum’s it won’t come naturally to me but you know what, I’ll work bloody hard at it and do my best and maybe that makes it all more rewarding :)

Census 2011, 10 years and 10 changes

4

Seeing as it’s Census 2011 time I’ve been having a think about all the changes in my life since the last Census in 2001 and I thought I’d try and list 10 things that have changed in my life over the last 10 years so here goes:

1) In 2001 I was living in Hull, since then I’ve moved in with hubby in York, then we moved to rented accomodation in Durham before finding the house of our dreams in Bearpark 3 years ago.

2) In 2001 I was single and living alone, since then of course I met my husband in January 2006 and got married in August 2007.

3) Of course back in 2001 I was also childless, since then Zara arrived on 29/11/09 swiftly followed by Oscar on 14/2/11.

4) Back in 2001 I had a Fjord horse called Aida and I spent 95% of my free time at the stables or out riding, since moving to Durham and having children I haven’t had chance to get back in the saddle although this is something I plan on doing at some point. I can’t wait until Zara is old enough to ride!

5) In 2001 I was just starting my qualification as a Chartered Accountant, 10 years on I am building up my own Accountancy company ABC North East It’s still small but I am gradually building up a very nice client base.

6) Back in 2001 I was saddled with debt from student loans but these are all paid off now and a distant memory :)

7) In 2001 I was still a meat eater, it wasn’t until I met my husband who is a vegetarian that I turned veggie myself. I don’t miss eating meat at all.
8) In 2001 I didn’t own a house, I was renting a one bedroom flat in Hull now we own a lovely house and a rather scary sized mortgage ;)

9) Back in 2001 I had 4 nephews, over the last few years we’ve had a baby boom in the family and I’ve now got 5 nephews and 2 nieces and if we include Zara and Oscar then my parents have had 5 more grandchildren since the last census was done!

10) Back in 2001 I think I was a bit of a lonely recluse and not particularly happy with my life, now I’m still a bit of a recluse but I have a wonderful family and find myself smiling all the time when I look at my wonderful little family and all that I have achieved over the last 10 years! :)

The Brown Family 2011

I considered making this post a MeMe and tagging people but I’m not very good at that but I’d love to know what changes have happened to you since the last Census so feel free to post me a link to your blog if you do something similar or just comment below :)

Mother Brown’s Guide to Baby Clothes

2

After a twitter conversation at 3am this morning on the confusing world of baby clothes, I thought I’d put down a guide to dressing your baby. (warning: some of this post is tongue in cheek and opinions are all mine so please do not be offended if you like to dress your baby in frills ;) )

So lets start with the basics

Vest
Otherwise known as a bodysuit in the US. This is the basic staple item in your babies wardrobe. They are worn as underwear under all other clothes and you will need about 12 in each size as your baby grows.

Zara modelling a vest

You can get long sleeved, short sleeved, sleeveless, patterned, ones with funny sayings, plain etc but I find the basic white sleeveless vest is best. It goes under everything, is easy to put on and take off and is unisex so when second baby arrives (as I am discovering) it doesn’t matter whether it’s a boy or girl as you can just dig out all the old vests and recycle them.

Vests have the added advantage that you can dress baby in vest alone for feeding or if it’s warm in summer. Remember the basic rules of baby clothes, the less they wear the less washing you have to do and the less hassle it is when changing nappies! :)

Vest as daytime wear

OK so the second staple item is babies wardrobe is…

Sleepsuit
Otherwise know as a romper suit in the US. This item of clothing is pretty much all you need for baby until they are about 6 months old. They come in 1001 different colours and patterns and this is where you can show off your babies individuality whilst still letting your baby be comfortable.

Not just for sleeping in though!

“But sleepsuits are just nightwear” I hear some of you cry. Well seeing as babies do pretty much nothing except sleep and lie down for the first six months of their life it seems the most logical thing to dress them in. It’s all very well having fancy clothing but to be honest if you were spending all day lying down wouldn’t you prefer to be in your pyjamas? Zara was pretty much in sleepsuits all day everyday until she was crawling. They are comfortable, quick to change, practical and you can get some gorgeous ones. As a busy mum I don’t have time to take off trousers, dresses, tights, socks, shoes etc everytime I need to change baby so sleepsuits it is.

Don’t confuse the sleepsuit/romper suit thing with items you can buy in the UK called romper suits, these tend to be similar “all in one” items of clothing but tend to not have feet in them and be a bit more “dressy/daytime wear” than sleepsuits.

Zara modelling what I would call a romper suit

So that’s the basics covered, then we move onto what I call…

Photo Clothes

These are the clothes which tend to be given as gifts (usually by people who haven’t had children) and tend to be pretty impractical. You know the type, frilly dresses, tights, fiddly fastenings and anything which looks cute but is a faff to put on and take off. You will find that these items are usually worn once and once only, it is of course obligatory that you get a photo of baby wearing the clothes to send to the person who gave it you but after this they will more than likely be retired to the back of the wardrobe and maybe brought out for a special occasion if they are lucky.

Shoes and Socks
Again an item of baby clothing that I just don’t “get”. I wouldn’t wear shoes if I was lying down all day so why would I put them on my baby. To be honest baby will just keep kicking them off anyway and you will spend half of your busy day just putting shoes back on. Of course shoes also need pairing with socks which also never actually stay on for more than 5 minutes and are a washing nightmare, you will lose at least 3 in every wash cycle and you will build a lovely collection of odd socks. My advice, avoid buying shoes and socks for as long as possible, Zara got her first shoes when she was 11 months old and only then did she really start wearing socks. The bonus about sleepsuits is that they cover the feet and so shoes and socks are not needed!

Jeans
Now this is my pet hate so I’m sorry if I offend anyone here but in my eyes jeans are a major no no for babies until they are able to at least crawl. Would you like to lie around in jeans all day, they can’t be comfy and I can’t think of any reason why a baby should wear jeans. Fair enough when they are starting to crawl and they need a bit more substantial clothing to cover knees but until then they just seem pointless to me.

Character Clothes
Again another one of my pet hates, no offence to anyone who loves Disney or other character clothes for their baby but I don’t do “branding”. Why pay for more expensive character clothes when you can get gorgeous normal clothes? Again fair enough when baby is old enough to have favourite characters they want to wear but before that they are just overpriced in my opinion. They also date photographs and take away from the main focus (ie the child) so stick to funky patterns, stripes, spots, stars, flowers etc and steer away from Mickey and Minnie!

Hats, Scratch Mitts, Booties
I was gifted so many of these with Zara and I don’t really recall using any of them except maybe one hat if we were going out somewhere. If you need scratch mittens then try and buy sleepsuits with them built in as separate ones always come off and are a faff to wash. I don’t even know what use booties actually have?

I think that’s all the basics covered so if you stick to the following guidelines you can’t really go wrong:
1) Always remember the less baby wears, the less washing you will need to do and the easier it is to change nappies.
2) Avoid anything that you wouldn’t like to spend all day lying around in yourself.
3) Stock up on vests and sleepsuits, it’s all you really need for the first 6 months.
4) Don’t buy loads of clothes in 0-3, you will get loads of presents in this size when baby arrives. If possible ask people to buy 3-6 month sized clothes instead otherwise you will have more 0-3 clothes than baby can ever possibly wear in 3 months!

Stokke Tripp Trapp Chair and Newborn Set Review

2

The lovely people at Stokke recently sent me a Stokke Tripp Trapp Newborn set to review. The Tripp Trapp Newborn is a cosy, new, ergonomically designed, pod chair that fits simply onto the top of the Tripp Trapp chair to create the perfect environment for your baby – from birth to six months (approx).

I was very impressed with the idea of having a baby seat which was at table height rather than floor height, especially in this household with 2 cats and of course Zara and her sticky fingers :) We are very much into baby led weaning and to us mealtimes are a time when we all sit down at the table and enjoy conversation and being a family. Zara has been joining us at the table for meals since she was 4 months old and able to support herself in a normal highchair and I love the fact that Oscar can join us from birth and that the Tripp Trapp Chair will be the only highchair I need to buy for him as with the addition of the Baby Set he will still be able to use the chair when he outgrows the Newborn Set (note to self: must order a baby set!).

I was a bit concerned when I first unpacked and put up the Tripp Trapp Chair and Newborn set as it does look a little on the small side, Oscar must have only weighed about 6lb when the following photo was taken but having tried the seat with a larger baby (ie my 8 month old nephew Maxwell) I can see how he will still be able to fit into the chair until he is approximately 6 months old (although realistically he will be in the baby seat by then).

Of course having an inquisitive 14 month old around the house, Zara had to try for herself to see whether she could fit in the Newborn set herself (she is currently obsessed with trying out everything of Oscar’s!) Of course as you would expect she is a little on the large side for it :)

But she did find that it makes a great place to hide underneath ;)

20110328-120425.jpg

Anyway back to my review :) I love the fact that the Newborn set can attach and detach from the Tripp Trapp chair so easily and it is extremely light. I find myself using it all around the house, for instance it’s ideal for taking up to the bathroom with me and having somewhere to put Oscar whilst I’m running his bath or doing other tasks around the house. I find myself often popping him in it at the table whilst I’m cooking dinner in an evening or putting away shopping etc, it’s great to just be able to look up and check that he is ok without having to worry about balancing bouncy chairs on the table (a major no no, I know but I’m sure most mothers will admit it!) or having a chair on the kitchen floor.

Oscar sat at the table whilst mum unpacks her shopping

The newborn set also has a very handy attachment which you can attach a toy to which will keep baby entertained.

20110328-120254.jpg

As you can see from the photos, Oscar is quite happy in his Newborn set and I as a mother am extremely happy with it, it’s both stylish and practical and has the added bonus that it is a chair for life and not something which will have to be retired at any time in the near future. The trouble is now I’m going to have to go out and buy Zara a Tripp Trapp Chair of her own as I can see there being battles over who gets custody of this one in the future :) I’m definitely a Stokke convert now and will be checking out their other products on their website here >>Stokke Website
