My Favourite Kitchen Gadgets
1I’m a bit of a gadget freak and I’m a bit obsessed with having gadgets in the kitchen so I thought I’d share with you my favourite ones
These aren’t paid reviews and I’ve paid for all these items myself, I just thought I’d share my kitchen gadget love
The first item that I cannot live without is our Tefal Quick Cup – if you haven’t heard of these, they are basically instant hot water dispenses. Put a mug under, press a button and a few seconds later you have hot water. Now the water isn’t boiling with these and so it isn’t suitable for baby bottles etc but it is perfect for cups of tea and coffee and there is no waiting round for the kettle to boil. It also saves energy as you’re only paying to heat the water you use. We’ve had our original Quick Cup about 4 years and it’s still going strong but looking around the best alternative I’ve seen currently available is this one on Amazon which sells for around £50. Breville VKJ318 Hot Cup with Variable Dispenser If you’ve never considered one, then next time it comes to replacing your kettle, I highly recommend you consider one.
The second gadget is a very recent addition, in fact it was a christmas present for my husband and it’s a Philips Senseo Coffee Machine. We got this model Philips Senseo Viva Café HD7825/60 Black Coffee Machine with Pod System and it has been a huge success. I’ve never been a fan of coffee really but I’m now fast becoming a coffee addict. I love their mug sized Americano coffees, the cappucinos are lovely except they only come in single cup size, as do the hot chocolates. I love waking up every morning and being able to get a nice proper coffee at the touch of a button
My third and favourite item was also a christmas present (yes I know – we were really romantic this year buying kitchen gadgets!) and it is of course my lovely breadmaker. I seriously cannot imagine life without it now. I opted for this one Morphy Richards Premium Plus 48319 Breadmaker, Stainless Steel as I liked the sound of all the extra features it has such as pizza dough settings, gluten free settings etc. I use this machine pretty much every day now. It’s so easy to use, we’ve used it for packet bread mixes, maderia cake, pizza dough, cheese and onion bread, white bread, wholemeal bread and everything has turned out brilliantly so far. Zara and Oscar love fresh bread and it has the added advantage that I can use low-sodium salt in it and so I’m not filling my kids with salt and additives that you find in processed bread. I also love the 12 hour delay so I can load the machine at night and wake up to fresh warm bread in the morning. My life is truely complete

*all links in this post are to items on amazon through my affiliates account, they are not sponsored and if you ended up buying an item through one of these links I would get a little bit of commission
Tomato, Artichoke Hearts and Butterbean Pasta Soup – A Slow Cooker Recipe
1It’s been a while since I’ve added any new veggie recipes to the blog, but I’ve been experimenting with my new slow cooker over the last couple of months and thought I’d share with you a delicious recipe that I’ve adapted from one I originally found in Slow Cooking for Vegetarians. With most of the recipes I try, I tend to find they need a fair bit of tweaking in order to work for us. This recipe is for a lovely thick soup/pasta casserole which when served with fresh bread is absolutely delicious!
Ingredients:
A little olive oil (for frying the onion and garlic)
1 onion (white)
2 cloves garlic
2 tins chopped tomatos
1 tin butterbeans
1 tin/jar of artichoke hearts
900ml of vegetable stock – I use 6 veggie oxo cubes in 900ml of water as I like it very strong
2 tspn dried Thyme
3-4 handfuls of pasta (I like to use mini pasta bows)
How to cook:
1. Chop the onion and garlic and fry for a few minutes in olive oil until they are just softened but not browned

Fry onion and garlic until just softened and not brown
2. Add in the stock, tomatos, drained butterbeans, drained artichoke hearts, thyme and season with some black pepper
3. Bring just to boil and then transfer to slow cooker and cook on low for around 5-6 hours

Pop in slow cooker and then relax for 5-6 hours!
4. Half an hour before serving, chuck in the pasta, stir and bump up to high setting
And that’s it! Serve in bowls with fresh, warm bread and butter! Sprinkle a little grated cheese on top to garnish if you like! Zara and Oscar love it!
Organic Baby Wipes and Biodegradable Nappies from Baby Patisserie Review
1In our household we get through an extremely large volume of nappies and baby wipes each week, with two children still in nappies. When Baby Patisserie contacted me to ask if I’d like to review some bio-degradable nappies and some organic baby wipes, I of course said yes. I admit I’ve tried reusable nappies before and we didn’t really get on with them but I’ve still got a large guilt complex for the amount of waste we are contributing to landfill and with most disposable nappies taking centuries to dispose it’s a terrifying thought.
Baby Patisserie sell Beaming Baby nappies which are biodegradable and disposable with the majority of the nappy degrading in just 4 years, compared to the 400 years of other leading brands. Beaming Baby nappies mean that your baby and their skin is exposed to less chemicals every day and the nappies last up to 12 hours. Since the baby nappies contain less chemicals than ordinary nappies when wet they do not emit the nasty chemical smell that you may have experienced from other brands.

We were given a couple of size 5 nappies to test on Oscar and Zara (they are both currently in the same size nappy). My first impressions of the nappy were that it seemed a bit bulkier and papery than the Pampers that we usually use. Once we put the nappy on, it fit great and both babies were happy in them, they didn’t seem as bulky once they were being worn. As for performance, well it’s hard to give you a complete opinion of them as we’ve only used 2 and only during the day so I didn’t get chance to put them to the test overnight. I can say that I didn’t notice any difference in performance to Pampers. Both Zara and Oscar had dry skin once the nappies were taken off (an issue I had with reusables was that their skin felt damp all the time) and the nappy did just what it was supposed to do.
The Beaming Baby nappies sell for £8.49 for a pack of 34 on the Baby Patisserie website which is more than you’d pay for Pampers, in comparison a pack of 27 Baby Dry nappies in the same size is £6.49 at Tesco. That works out at 25p per nappy for the biodegradable ones and 24p per nappy for Pampers so actually it’s not that much more really and 1p more a nappy to reduce your landfill guilt? Sounds good to me. If like me, you are considering ways to make a difference, then it’s worth giving these nappies a try and seeing how you get on
We were also given a pack of Beaming Baby Organic Baby Wipes to try out.

Beaming Baby wipes contains over 95% organic ingredients and are certified by the Organic Food Federation. The highest quality ingredients mean that these best selling organic baby wipes are incredibly soft and gentle on baby’s skin. Each pack contains over 90mls of Organic Aloe Vera (30 times more than any other wipe!), which heals, moisturises and nourishes sensitive skin. Beaming Baby organic wipes are free from: Chlorine, alcohol, paraben preservatives, sodium laureth sulphate and they won the Mother & Baby Bronze Award – Best Skincare Product for 2009 & 2008.
Now I have to admit that I found these wipes a little on the expensive side, selling for £2.99 for a pack of 72 on Baby Patisserie but as far as baby wipes go, they felt soft and the kids didn’t mind me scrubbing away at their faces with them after dinner. I do like the idea of using organic baby wipes but I have my reservations about the cost seeing as we get through wipes by the truckload in this household. I tend to normally use tesco fragrance free baby wipes and because neither of my children have had problems with using them, I’m not sure I’d switch.
Dressing Up Fun
2This post is a entry in Mummy Loves Tutus and Superheros competition which she is running with Appliances Online Washing Machines
I’ve been trying to find my favourite photo of Zara and Oscar dressing up, we have photos of Spider costumes, Owl and Pussycat costumes but the one photo that I absolutely love (and was used for our family Christmas Card this year) is this one….my little snowman and elf

Graco Nautilus Car Seat Review
0As you may know, we’ve been looking for a Group 1+ car seat for Oscar for a while now as he was fast becoming too small for his infant car seat. With thanks to my lovely sister over at Mummy Loves who is a Graco Ambassador, I received a Graco Nautilus car seat to review. The Nautilus is great as it is Group 1, 2 and 3 (9-36kgs) – so this is the only car seat that we will ever need for him now!

Graco Nautilus – The Details
Safety

Side impact protection
-
5 point harness
-
Lock-off mechanism
-
Group 1 Stage: 9 to 18 kilos with in-built harness and harness protect
-
Group 2, 3 Stage: 15 to 36 kilos – please remove harness and use with a seat belt
-
Direct-access recline handle
-
Intuitive belt routing
-

-

-
Machine washable cover- Integrated cup holder
-
Storage compartments
My first impressions on receiving the Nautilus was that it looked lovely and spacious and extremely sturdy looking.

Oscar's first time in the Nautilus
Oscar certainly seemed very happy in his new seat though he was a little perplexed with suddenly being able to see forwards.
When it came to fastening the car seat into the car (we use it in a Kia Sorento) I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to install. With all the media going on about how so many car seats aren’t correctly fitted, it is nice to find a car seat which really is easy to fit and doesn’t move an inch when I test it.
I also like the fact that it has a drinks holder and a couple of handy storage compartments in the arm rests. Now Oscar is a little young for having drinks in the car yet but I know from experience with Zara how annoying it is trying to pass drinks back to a toddler and trying to reach for dropped cups.

Oscar in his big boy seat
I have to admit I’ve not quite figured out the recline feature yet as it doesn’t recline quite as much as I like but at least it has one, the seat we have for Zara doesn’t have a recline and I always feel sorry for her when she falls asleep bolt upright. Oscar at least has a little recline to make his snoozing easier.
The Graco Naultius can be bought from various places, the cheapest I’ve found this morning was on Amazon for around £125 here >> Graco Nautilus Group 1/2/3 Car Seat
which although it seems expensive at first, considering it will be the only car seat I need from now on, it’s not a bad investment.
The Graco Nautilus also comes with a FREE childrens play centre
– as you can see from the following photos, the box provided hours of entertainment for both Zara and Oscar lol

So Oscar gets a car seat and I get a new den - great!

Plenty of room for me and all my toys in here!
2011 – A Review of The Year (part 1)
1I’m a little late in doing this as it’s been a manic month but here is my review of 2011 on Knees Up Mother Brown!
January
At the start of 2011 I was 6.5 months pregnant and starting to experience problems. January consisted of posts relating to late pregnancy, about my stress at having to have a c-section, my worries of how it will affect Zara, my annoyance at being public property and my lack of preparation:
I’m stressing about a potential c-section
The youngest was the most loved
February
Now february is where things went a little crazy with Oscar arriving on Valentines day and being in NICU until early March. I still managed to blog though and here are a few that were posted:
Feel like I’m sitting on a time bomb - I didn’t know at the time that 4 days later he would arrive!
It’s all about new things (of course it wasn’t all about Oscar!)
March
March was about changes, I shared Oscar’s birth story and looked at the changes in the 10 years since the last census:
April
April was a quiet month on the blog, a couple of my favourite posts from the month were:
Baby development, by now your baby should be juggling whilst riding a unicycle
and
May
May saw me worrying about Oscar’s reflux and asking about breastfeeding etiquette:
Am I just another paranoid mum?
Should breastfeeding areas be female only?
June
June saw me speaking at Cybermummy and admitting my strange washday obsessions:
Cybermummy – the highs, lows and bits inbetween
Washday blues – my strange obsession
and I will leave you with that for now….part 2 covering July – Dec will be with you soon xxx
The Day We Went To Lapland
1It’s taken me a while to get round to writing this post as it’s been a crazy month in the Brown household but I’ve finally got time to sit down and tell you about our trip. As those of you who follow me on twitter will know, we were lucky enough to win a day trip to Lapland for Zara and myself. Firstly, huges thanks to Spud and Spike for mentioning the competition on your blog – if you hadn’t mentioned it then I wouldn’t have entered
The prize that we won was a Lapland Day Break from Transun. I’ve always said that I wanted to take Zara and Oscar to Lapland at some point whilst they were young but I certainly hadn’t planned on taking Zara at this age, she had only just turned 2 and a little too young really but I entered the competition on the off chance and we won so off to Lapland we were going
Expecting it to be a very long and tiring day we decided to pay for my husband to join us on the trip to make things a bit easier to manage and I didn’t want him to miss out on the experience. So it wasn’t an entirely free trip for us and by the time we’d bought a fast track passport for Zara, a one day passport for my husband (we realised his had expired), paid for my husbands place and then bought lots of warm clothes for Zara, we had spent quite a lot of money – whoops!
And so at 3:30am (yes 3:30) Thursday 22nd December, our day began…..Luckily I have a very good friend who was happy to come around and look after Oscar for us as he really was too young to come with us. We were due to fly from Doncaster airport at 7:30am and so needed to leave our house by 4:30 at the latest to get us down to the airport in time. Zara wasn’t overly impressed at being woken up at 4am, dressed and put in the car in the middle of the night bless her but we managed it and after a hasty goodbye to our babysitter we were off. When we left our house at 4am it was a rather mild 11 degrees centigrade! Warm for December and very warm compared to the predicted temperatures in Lapland.

Mum it's the middle of the night!
After a 2 hour drive down to the airport, we checked in and made it through security. Zara was a little bewildered by everything bless her but charmed all the security people and we even managed to get her carton of toddler milk through security so she could have her evening bottle on the flight home.
Once on the flight we were relieved to have 3 seats together so Zara could sit between us and Zara loved the flight. She has never flown before so I was expecting it to be traumatic but she enjoyed it. She loved her in flight meals and looking out of the windows. Even now she says “airplane fly high though the sky, mummy on airplane, daddy on airplane, zara on airplane, oscar not on airplane” bless her

Clouds Mummy! (it was hot on the plane hence the lack of top!)
After a 3 hour flight we landed in Lapland and were quickly through security and loaded onto coaches. It was around 1pm and still light though it was just starting to get dark. It didn’t feel too cold but with darkness falling we were warned that the temperature would drop fast and it was predicted to be around -15 by the end of the day! Zara loved the coach (another first for her!) and as we zoomed across Lapland for around 25 minutes we were entertained by christmas music on the coach.

Big girl on the coach
Our first destination was the “suiting and booting” building where we were all equiped with thermal snowboots and snowsuits. Luckily Zara had her own snowboots as they didn’t have any small enough for her but we found a snowsuit that fit her at least. Once we were all suited and booted we were back on the coach for a 5 minute trip to the activity area.

All wrapped up against the cold
Once we arrived at the activity zone, Zara had her first experience of walking in the snow as we had a tour of the area and were shown where all the facilities were. I think Zara found walking a little bit too cold on her feet so after her first initial walk she opted for the preferred choice of being carried by Mummy or Daddy.

Mummy and Zara
When we first arrived at the activity zone, there was a rush for the husky dog rides and the reindeer rides and quite long queues for them so we went and booked our timeslot to go visit Santa and then decided to go and have lunch in the restaurant in the hope the queues for the activities would die down a bit once the initial rush was over. Lunch was served in a cabin and was buffet style – vegetarian option was soup, pasta and a mushroom sauce, chips and bread which went down very nicely. After filling up on food we then decided it was time to brave the queues and try out some of the activities. Our first choice was the reindeer sleigh ride, there was no queue for this whatsoever by the time we got there so we bundled into the sleigh. Zara absolutely loved the reindeer ride and she snuggled up inbetween my legs and smiled the whole way. Daddy was in the sleigh in front of us.

On the reindeer sleigh
Now with a two year old who doesn’t like the cold, we had to choose our tactics wisely as if we were outside for too long Zara got upset. Luckily there was another cabin which serves biscuits and hot drinks all day and this proved to be a valuable resource. It also had a roaring fire in there and so between rides this is where we hung out. We probably spent most of the day in here to be honest as playing in the snow and tobogganing weren’t really Zara’s thing – trying to keep gloves on a 2 year old is impossible and she really wasn’t impressed with getting her hands cold.

Hot chocolate and gingerbread for mummy!

and gingerbread for Zara (she wasn't impressed with hot chocolate though!)
After warming up, we then ventured out for a husky dog ride. This was definitely Zara’s favourite activity of the day. She loved watching the dogs running past with the sleighs and when it was our time to get on a sleigh she was so excited bless her. We zoomed around the frozen lake and I was very surprised at just how fast they went. Unfortunately I don’t have any photos of the dog ride, we have a video but I haven’t had chance to download it off the husband’s phone yet. After the dog ride we popped into the souvenir shop to warm up and we couldn’t leave without buying Zara a husky doggy of her own to take home.

A husky doggy of my own!
Finally it was time for us to go and meet the big man himself! Now I wasn’t expecting a lot here – Zara has never met Santa before and she doesn’t really like strangers so I was expecting tears but it was a day for new experiences and we couldn’t go all the way to Lapland without trying to see him at least. In order to find Santa’s house in the forest we had to go on a snowmobile ride to get there.

A very tired and cold Zara gets her helmet on for the ride

All smiles
On arrival at Santa’s house we were greeted by an elf who helped us off with our helmets and showed us in to see Santa himself. At this point Zara decided that she didn’t want to see Santa and she refused to acknowledge him. In fact she refused to go within 6 feet of him and so the lovely photo of her meeting the real Santa for the first time looked like this – lol

Hmm at least we will laugh about it when she is older!
After another snowmobile ride back to the activity zone we headed back over to the hot drink hut to warm up. By this time it was extremely busy in there as pretty much everyone was now crowded in warming up whilst waiting for their coaches back to the airport. But we found a space and sat down to drink more hot chocolate and eat more gingerbread biscuits until it was time for our coach ride back to the airport.

Heading back to the coach

Back on the coach with Daddy
Once back at the airport, we had an hours delay for our plane but we were very happy to be finally on board and on our way home. As soon as we sat down we gave Zara her evening bottle and within about 15 minutes of take off she was….

Fast asleep on the plane home with her new friend
Zara slept pretty much the entire flight home but she did wake up just as started our descent into Doncaster and promptly threw up everywhere. Huge thanks to the flight stewards who came to our rescue and helped to get everything cleaned up so we could get fastened back in our seats for landing. I guess a long day, lots of biscuits and strange food and the cold took it’s toll on her. Though after throwing up she went back to sleep and pretty much slept all the way home
We finally got back home at 1:30am – 22 hours since we had got up and all 3 of us collapsed into bed after sending home the best babysitter in the world!
Overall we had a lovely time. Ideally I wouldn’t have taken a 2 year old, it is cold and it’s a long day and they can’t really appreciate the whole Santa experience but we have some wonderful memories from our trip and Zara still tells everyone about the flying high in airplane and doggy ride. Will we go back? Yes I think we will when Zara and Oscar are both older and able to cope with the cold better.
Points to note if considering visiting yourself:
Take plenty of hats and gloves – handwarmers are essential!
There weren’t any baby changing facilities (not surprising as it’s not really designed for toddlers) so be prepared to change nappies on the cold floor!
Ideally wait until your children are old enough to handle the cold before taking them – I’d say aged 5-6 would be a good age to visit!
A Book About Me – From Baby Patisserie
1The lovely people from Baby Patisserie, recently sent me a Book About Me memory book to review and I have to say I’m very impressed. I’m not usually one for traditional baby memory books but this one is absolutely lovely and we are going to have so much fun filling it in (I need to decide whether it’s going to be for Oscar or Zara first though!)

What I love about this book, is although it contains all the traditional memory book features, it has a lovely modern feel to it. The bright and funky designs on every page are beautiful to look at and make turning each page a pleasure.

The book covers a much wider range than traditional memory books and lets you keep recording all those precious moments through until around 5 years old! We love the fact that by the end of the book your child will be the one creating the memories in it

There is plenty of room for adding scan pictures, first photographs, family trees, first foods and even pages to detail your childs first travels.

We also love the spare pages at the back to allow your child to doodle away their own memories and the plastic pockets for keeping hold of special items you don’t want to lose such as hospital bracelets and in my case the supermarket receipt from the shop I did an hour before going into labour with Zara (I just can’t bring myself to throw it away!)

The trendy and colourful illustrations make the book suitable for both boys and girls and it would make a lovely gift to expecting or new parents. It has a RRP of £24.50 but it currently on introductory offer at Baby Patisserie for £19 which I think is a great price for a product of this quality.
There is also a sister book to this one called For My Grandchild which makes a lovely present for Grandparents and is a lovely way of getting grandparents to record all their memories so that they can be passed down over the years.

Zara is...
